Heat Wave Hits

Posted July 13, 2005, 12:42 PM.

Strong high pressure building Monday and Tuesday has led to triple digit temperatures, the hottest of the year so far, in western Riverside County on Wednesday. After Lake Elsinore topped 100°F on Tuesday, many communities were already in triple digits in the noontime hour on Wednesday, including Lake Elsinore, Menifee Valley, Murrieta and Hemet. Based on projections, Temecula would be close to triple digits later in the day.

Lake Elsinore led the way with 106°F, followed by Menifee Valley at 104°F and Murrieta and Hemet at 100°F. The coolest WeatherCurrents weather site Wednesday was in De Luz.

A similar heat wave last year at this time set temperature records in Temecula at 98°F. That record may fall later today.

Little relief is in the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service, which has scorching temperatures continuing into Friday. Monsoonal moisture may be a factor Thursday and Friday in some areas, but will probably remain to the east.

Traditionally, late July and early August are the hottest times of year in western Riverside county.
